How to Read the Bible: Come Hungry
Continuing a series of posts on how how to approach Bible reading. Be sure to check out Part 1 also.
2. Your Bible reading is not for God’s benefit or appeasement.
Undoubtedly, this has already happened. You set your appointment with Jesus to read the Scriptures, only to hit the snooze button one too many times. Now, you must hustle just to make it to work on time, get the kids dropped off, etc. You resolve to make it up the next day or on the next Grace Day, but that rolls around and the same thing happens.
At some point, the guilt of missing so many days becomes so great that in obligation, you begrudgingly sit down, open your Bible and begin to plow through the missed reading while you daydream about getting a root canal…which oddly enough, seems more appealing at the time.
No wonder we often give up trying to read the Bible! If we think we owe it to God to read the Bible, then we are approaching the Bible all wrong. If we think we earn some more of God’s good graces by keeping a consistent quiet time and subsequently receive His wrath for missing quiet times, we’re missing the point.
The Bible is given to us as a meal to feast on, not a project to complete before Judgment Day. You and I live under grace…grace given to us by Jesus and Him alone, not by our quiet times and holy living. Missing a quiet time could never compromise God’s love and grace for you just the same as having a super extended quiet time cannot earn you more merit in God’s kingdom. Our hope is Jesus, not ourselves. Our confidence is in His finished work, not our work still progress.
When you miss a meal you get hungry. But you don’t stop eating. You long for a meal and when it comes, you are grateful and you chow down with great delight. Approach the Bible the same way. If you miss a meal, don’t stop. Approach the Bible hungry to see the glory, grace, and gifts of God in every text and on every page.
As one writer has said:
“In the same way that skipping breakfast is more of a missed opportunity than a morally dubious choice; not going to the scriptures for nourishment is not a matter of calling down the anger of God, but of omitting to take advantage of his good gifts to his children.”
It’s not for God’s benefit that we read the Scriptures. By His grace, it’s for our benefit and delight. Come hungry!
How to Read the Bible: It’s Not About You
As we press on through week two of New Thru 30, I want to share a few thoughts to help you approach the Bible and your time reading God’s Word with the right perspective.
It’s important that we understand that the Bible is not primarily a moral guidebook. The Bible is not a collection of random stories stitched together to form a nice story book. The Bible is ONE story…God’s Story. And God’s Story is simply the greatest story ever told.
Here is the first of three principles to keep in mind as you read:
1. The Bible is not about you; it’s about Jesus.
Have you ever felt like your Bible reading was not working? You know…you read what you were supposed to that day, but when you came home from work, you still kicked the cat and snapped at your kids. Then we wonder what happened.
Most of us approach the Scriptures looking for practical insights on how to live better, how to behave, how to get our kids to behave, how to…well, fill in the blank with anything. We expect to walk away with a list of points to apply to make our lives better or a list of things to fix in our lives because God called us out.
While certainly the Bible does offer us help in honoring God with our lives, it is not primarily a moral guidebook. To view it as only a moral guidebook will leave us incredibly frustrated for two reasons:
- The Bible is not always obviously helpful. Admit it…you read Matthew 1 (the geneology of Jesus) and wondered, “Why the heck is that in the Bible? I have no idea what to do with that.” You have to read 11 chapters of Romans before you get to a single application command or imperative. And don’t even get started on the Old Testament, right?! All the twists and turns, long lists of names and places, etc. If the Bible is just a moral guidebook, we fly right past the confusing or hard stuff or we twist and manipulate it. In our attempt to “do something,” we miss the meaning of the Scriptures.
- No one could possibly uphold the moral standard presented in the Scriptures. Forget all the rest of it, let’s just start with the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20). How you doing on those? Or, check out Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). How’s that going for you? If the Bible is a moral guidebook, it becomes a crushing and impossible moral burden to bear.
Much more than a moral guidebook, the Bible is God’s Story of redemption and rescue through Jesus. The Bible is not a book given to dole-out moral lessons, but to teach us about Jesus so that we might delight all the more in Him.
If you’re frustrated in your Bible reading, it’s time to read differently. Stop thinking that the Bible is about you by looking for moral insights and start approaching the Bible looking for God’s redemption through Jesus in every text.
God wants us to live holy lives. But it’s possible only because of His grace towards us in and through Jesus. The Bible is about Jesus, not us.
Question: Why did Jesus warn people not to share what He had done for them?
NOTE: due to an error, this post did not post at its scheduled time, which was Wednesday morning. I apologize.
By far, the most popular question we’ve received from the first 2 days of reading (Matthew 1-12 & 13-23) is “Why did Jesus warn people not to share what He had done for them?” It is a bit confusing at first because after all, isn’t that why we’re here and didn’t Jesus command us to take the gospel to the nations (Matthew 28-19-20; Acts 1:8)?
Yes, Jesus did command us to take the gospel to the nations, but that was after His rescue mission was complete. Sin’s price had been paid and He had conquered death, hell, and Satan by rising from the dead. Prior to the crucifixion and resurrection, there were several instances in Matthew’s gospel where Jesus sternly warns people not to share that He is the Messiah or what He has done for them.
In Matthew 8:4, Jesus heals a man with leprosy and says to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone…” In Matthew 9:30, after giving sight to two blind men, Jesus “sternly warned them, ‘See that no one knows about it.’” In Matthew 12:16, after healing many people of many diseases, Jesus “ordered them not to make him known.” In Matthew 16:20, after the disciples confess Him as the Christ (Messiah), Jesus “strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ.” Finally, in Matthew 17:9, after Peter, James, and John witnessed the Transfiguration, Jesus commanded them,”‘Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.’”
There are several reasons why Jesus would have made these commands and warnings:
In the case of the leper, Jesus called the man to show himself to the priests in accordance with Levitical law (Leviticus 14) and to let their testimony confirm the man’s complete healing of leprosy. The man’s testimony may have been disputed, but the priestly testimony would not be.
Jesus didn’t come to be a rockstar; He came as Messiah, our Rescuer. Yes, His miracles were done in public and were meant to reveal His divine power and support His claim as Messiah. But, many came to see Him only as a healer and miracle worker and were unwilling to follow those signs to see Him as Messiah. They wanted to see the magic show and get a free meal, not accept Jesus as their Messiah. So, Jesus wanted to fend off as much of this crowd as possible.
Jesus was also aware that the repeated miracles and demonstrations of His divine power could attract a following that would try to raise Him up as a great political and/or military leader. This was the historical expectation many Jews had of the Messiah and of course, nothing about Jesus’ birth, family, life, and public ministry lined up with this thinking. Jesus did not want people to become fanatical about Him and attempt to raise Him up as the political or military leader they expected Messiah to be. Also, Jesus did not want to prematurely incite the religious establishment that would then come after Him and have Him killed for His claims to be Messiah. This was, after all, why Jesus was killed – He claimed to be the King of the Jews, yet the Jews did not receive Him. The timing of it all had to be according to the Father’s plan.
In all of these, there is a bottom line reason why Jesus would warn people as He did: “Perhaps the most important reason Jesus did not want His miracle power to be too highly acclaimed was that this was not the time of His exaltation but of His humiliation” (John MacArthur). Jesus’ life was one of astounding humility (Phil. 2:5-12). His death was worse than that of the worst criminal. And all of it was so that His resurrection would be that much more a demonstration of His power and Messiahship. The miracles were mere previews of what was to come. Before He would be exalted, He would be deeply humiliated.
Jesus didn’t come to be exalted as a miracle worker who cured people’s physical needs. He came to be exalted as the Resurrected Messiah who cured people’s deepest spiritual need.
Hope that helps.
New Thru 30
Yesterday, we launched what could be one of the most challenging and rewarding seasons of our lives and in the young life of Awaken Church.
Let’s face it…we know we should read the Bible, we know we need to read the Bible, and we want to read the Bible. So every year we commit to try harder, read it cover to cover, read a little everyday…and it goes well for about a month. We get confused by something we read, the Old Testament makes us sleepy, and we get frustrated because we miss a few days of reading. We give up and wait until next year to try again.
But this year is different.
Awaken Church is committed to engaging God by hitting the Bible head-on. It’s a new year, so we’re reading the New Testament. And we’re doing it in 30 days!
Challenging? Definitely. Rewarding? More than we’ll ever know.
We kicked it off today with Matthew 1-12. I’ll be using the blog to post insights, answer questions about confusing verses/passages, and share how God is working in my life through His Word
I can’t think of a better way to start a new year and a new decade than by immersing ourselves in God’s Word. Can’t wait to see how He moves in power through His revealed Word!
AC’ers…let’s do this!
***Special thanks to our friends at Elevation Church for taking this idea from concept to reality, for doing the graphic design work, and making it all available for free.
“Do You Hear?” Begins Sunday
I can’t wait to officially kickoff our first Christmas at Awaken this Sunday as we start a brand new series called, “Do You Hear?” The next 3 Sundays are sure to be the most powerful, life-changing worship experiences we have had to date as we celebrate the coming of our Savior Jesus!
Don’t miss out on what God is going to do over the next 3 weeks! Here’s how you can get involved:
1. Pray :: pray for God to move powerfully each week. Pray for lives to be changed for the glory of God!
2. Invite :: this would be an incredible time to invite your friends to join you at Awaken. I can promise you this: they’ll hear the gospel of Jesus in a clear, creative, and compelling way!
3. Serve :: if you haven’t jumped on a Sunday serving team yet, now is the time! This is the next step for you to take in getting involved with Awaken.
4. Come :: Oh yeah…make plans for you and your family to be at Awaken each week of the series!
Looking forward to celebrating the Christmas season with you! See you Sunday at 10:30 am at Polo Road Elementary School as we kickoff “Do You Hear?”
Marked by Moments
Our lives are marked by moments.
First words. First steps. First bike ride. First day of school. First kiss. Graduation. Wedding day.
Some are big like those I just listed. Some are small, routine, and seemingly everyday…yet they have a profound impact.
Last week at Catalyst Conference, what started as a seemingly routine moment turned into a huge one that marked me and our family for life. You can watch the video here. Seriously…do it.
As a result of this moment, our family sponsored our first child through Compassion International. We told Jimmy’s story to our girls before we introduced them to our sponsored child, Bontu, a kindergarten-aged child in Ethiopia. Our girls couldn’t wait to write Bontu a letter and now we pray for her each night. They are being marked now and they know God is using them to make a difference in her life and family. And this is just the beginning.
We plan to highlight initiatives such as Compassion as well as adoption very soon at Awaken. Can’t wait to see how God will move as we do!
Seriously…who knew that $38 dollars per month could lead to a life and a moment like this? We serve an awesomely gracious, sovereign, and good God!
THIS Sunday @ Awaken :: BAPTISM TAILGATE

I know, I know, I know…blogging has been a little sparse lately. Okay, it’s been non-existent. Doesn’t mean I haven’t been writing and working on some stuff that is to come. But that’s not what this is about…
I am absolutely stoked about this Sunday at Awaken. We’ll have our first public baptism celebration and celebrate, we will!
We have at least 3 people who will be baptized on Sunday as a public declaration of their faith in Jesus and a symbol of the new life they have in Him. Immediately following the baptisms, we are going to turn the parking lot at Polo Road Elementary into a tailgate party like no other!
We’d love for you to join us at 10:30 am at Polo Road Elementary School for worship, baptism, and the tailgate party. Going to be epic!
Awaken Church Launches This Sunday!

Launch weekend is here! Can’t wait for Sunday! Here are 5 things you can pray for Sunday:
- Pray that Jesus will be lifted high in everything we do!
- Pray that as He is lifted high, that He will draw men, women, and children to Himself. Pray for people to surrender their lives to Jesus on Sunday!
- Pray for our serving teams to have the assurance that nothing they do for Jesus is in vain and that as a result, they will go over the top in their ministry areas on Sunday. Pray that God will honor them for their commitment to Him!
- Pray for things to go well in the adult worship experience and in our AwakenKids elementary experience. Pray for no technical glitches! Pray for Josh Davis and our band to lead worship with confident humility in the adult experience.
- Pray for me as I preach. I cannot put into words the weight of responsibility the Lord has given me to communicate His Word in such a way that the people He sends will fall head over heels in love with Jesus. I am humbled and honored. Pray for accuracy, clarity, and power – pray for the Holy Spirit to do His thing!
Our first series is simply called The Gospel. What better way to start than with the center of everything we are and everything we do! We’re going to spend most of the next 4 weeks in John 3.
Most people have heard of Jesus and most people have heard the Gospel…but has anything changed as a result? The reality is that when the Gospel takes root in our lives, everything changes – starting with us and extending to the world. God has been using His Gospel to change lives, cities, and nations for 2000 years and we’re praying we will see the same thing happen over the next 4 weeks as we launch Awaken Church.
Join us THIS Sunday at 10:30 am at Polo Road Elementary School. We’re ready for you!
If Jesus Is Not There
Hard to believe, but it’s launch week for Awaken Church! What started as a somewhat reluctant dream 2 years ago is now on the cusp of becoming a full-fledged reality! Depending on the day and the hour, I bounce back and forth from “over the top excitement” to “butterflies in my stomach nervous.”
I know Jesus is in this and I know this is His church…yet, I know He has called me to serve this church and this city as an under-shepherd. I want to do a good job…to honor Him by faithfully leading the people He sends to love Him, love people, and join with Him in bringing His Kingdom to earth.
One of the primary ways God has called and gifted me to lead is in preaching. From the first time I preached as a 17 year old high school senior, I knew that whatever I did in life had to include preaching God’s Word. Through the years and by God’s grace, I have been able to preach in some wonderful churches and at some wonderful events. But none of those remotely compares to the sense of responsibility I feel in preparing to preach week in and week out to the Awaken Church community.
I read a quote over the weekend that asked one of the most challenging questions I have ever heard or considered:
“The critical question for our generation – for every generation – is this: If you could have heaven, with no sickness, and with all the friends you ever had on earth, and all the food you ever liked, and all the leisure activities you ever enjoyed, and all the natural beauties you ever saw, all the physical pleasures you ever tasted, and no human conflict or any natural disasters, could you be satisified, with heaven, if Christ were not there?“ – John Piper, God is the Gospel, p. 15
I was stunned by Piper’s words. Not because they are wrong or heretical. But because the question reveals more of the depraved nature of my heart. Yes, you and I are more guilty than we realize of wanting Jesus’ stuff more than Jesus Himself. But the next line brought me to tears:
“And the question for Christian leaders is: Do we preach and teach and lead in such a way that people are prepared to hear that question and answer with a resounding ‘No’?…Can we really say that our people are being prepared for heaven where Christ himself, not his gifts, will be the supreme pleasure?” – Piper, p. 15
My chief responsibility as a preacher is to lead people to fall absolutely head over heels in love with Jesus to the point that He is their greatest pursuit and object of their highest affection. That He is their pursuit…not just His help, or His provision, or His grace, as good as they are. That He is their greatest affection…not just when things are going well or when things are falling apart, but all the time.
Of course, the greatest challenge for me as a pastor is for Jesus to be MY greatest pursuit and object of my highest affection. Then, it is to love, study, know, and preach His word in such a way that the people of Awaken Church are led to the same pursuit.
And so, this must be the aim of my preaching. In every sermon. In every series. If people are not led to deeply love Jesus…to taste and see that He is good…to savor and seek Him above all else…then what am I doing?
Awaken Church…know this is my deep commitment and greatest prayer for you…that you would love and pursue Jesus, not just His stuff, above all else. I commit to lead you there by my example and in the preaching of God’s Word each Sunday. Pray for me and know that I am praying for you.
Here’s the result…
“Nothing fits a person to be more useful on earth than to be more ready for heaven. This is true because readiness for heaven means taking pleasure in beholding the Lord Jesus, and beholding the glory of the Lord means being changed into his likeness. Nothing would bless this world more then more people who are more like Christ. For in likeness to Christ the world might see Christ.“ – Piper, p. 16
Amen.
MidWeek Update
We’re in the middle of another action-packed week as we get ready for the biggest weekend in Awaken Church’s brief history. Here’s the scoop on what’s happenin’…
- Had our last Sunday morning Launch Team meeting this past Sunday. I love this group of people! They truly “get it,” which gives me great joy and expectation as their pastor! They love Jesus, they love people, and they are hungry to see God move in our city. Cannot wait to see how God uses them as we move forward to full, public launch!
- Weathermen in Columbia do not know what they are talking about…ever! If they call for snow, wear shorts. If they call for rain, ditch the umbrella. Seriously.
- But, they couldn’t keep us down because our team rallied together on Sunday and passionately decided to re-schedule Movies in the Park for this Friday night, August 28. I am so proud of our team not just for deciding to do the event, but for the reasons why. Like I said earlier, they get it.
- We’re getting geared up for our 2nd Preview Service on Sunday morning! I cannot wait for Sunday to get here! The 1st Preview Service went so well and we have made a ton of improvements since then…can’t wait to see what happens! Pray that Jesus will be lifted high, that we’ll connect with lots of new people, and that they will want to come back and join the mission.
- A great team of AC’ers served Carolina students at Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM) last night. The BCM leaders called the food spread the best ever and Sam did an amazing job creating an Awaken-like environment for serving the food. Pipe and Drape works anywhere and everywhere!
- I woke up wide-eyed at 1:17 am on Tuesday morning and when I put my head back on my pillow at 4:48 am, I had sermon series/concepts laid out through Easter 2010…and a pretty good start on beyond that. Love it when God speaks! Now, time to DO WORK to get ready to preach all those bad boys. Can’t wait!
- Last, but not least, gotta drop a line for Catalyst Conference. Can’t wait to celebrate 10 years of leadership goodness on October 7-9 in Atlanta with the best speaker lineup ever. If you’re not registered yet, what the heck are you waiting on? Best prices are available NOW and the next deadline is TOMORROW, so get on your horse and call my main man Chad Johnson (not to be confused with Ochocinco) and get signed up. I’ll see you there!
Here’s to Wednesday!
